Growing up there were three women in my household- me, my older sister, and my mother. They are the people that taught me the meaning of Sisterhood. Amongst these networks there are blood sisters, mothers, cousins, relatives, troops, friends, pets, and heroes that all share an unspoken connection of womanhood that is sacred. This bond describes a stronghold that embraces each other’s individuality and identities despite anything else.
My compositions are drawn from my experiences within my sisterhood and issues we face as a society through my lens of emotions, biases, and interpretations. A simplification is formed through the collection of my memories and fervors; subtracting and combining components, which surrenders the fruitless and retains the necessary. My work is to be seen as an opportunity to create a private and intimate moment between the viewer and their Sisterhood. I manipulate color relationships and techniques in my work to mimic the way I see my sisters. Orchestrating colors is a way I am able to find a visual representation of my sentiments, while also communicating to an audience what these are in a nonverbal way. This mutual understanding of emotion across a community of people is the base of what I believe is a Sisterhood.
